Issues Affecting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth

While many individuals are coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender at an earlier age, schools are not adapting to meet these student’s needs and prevent discrimination. In addition, many states do not have anti-discrimination laws to protect LGBT youth from violence and harassment.

Within this resource are specific case studies of discrimination faced by LGBT individuals, descriptions of existing state policies and intervention groups against discrimination, and discussions on current policies and programs, such as the No Child Left Behind Act.

Information on the issues affecting LGBT individuals and more can be found within these 6 chapters:

  1. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth: A Critical Population
  2. A Grave Picture of Harassment and Violence in Schools
  3. Existing Policy Interventions
  4. Leaving our Children Behind: The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
  5. Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage Sex Education
  6. Filling in the Gaps: A Research Agenda

The resource, “Education Policy: Issues Affecting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth,” was written by Jason Cianciotto and Sean Cahill. It was published in 2003 by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute. Task Force is an organization that works to increase the understanding of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) individuals and combat the harassment and violence these individuals often face. Click here view the pdf and read about the specific case studies, intervention groups, and policies affecting LGBT youth today.
